The person standing in front of me was Daniel, a boy from several of my classes who had always been friendly but never especially close to me. Without making a scene or acting awkward, he stepped behind my wheelchair and gently rolled me onto the dance floor as though it were the most natural thing in the world. At first, I felt nervous because I could feel people staring. But Daniel didn’t treat me differently or make me feel fragile. He simply danced with me — turning my wheelchair smoothly with the music, laughing naturally, and making me feel included instead of pitied. For the first time that night, I stopped worrying about how others saw me. I laughed, smiled, and forgot about the uncomfortable silence from earlier. When the songs ended, Daniel simply shrugged off my gratitude like it was no big deal. But something about the way he looked at me stayed in my mind long after prom ended.
